THE DORMS
CHECK-IN TIME, WHAT TO BRING
BREAKFAST AND DINNER
ETC.

The dorms are a great experience for a camp
of this nature. Every year we add more and
more kids to the number of people staying
in the dorms. Most kids who stay in the dorms
one year not only return to the camp, but
anticipate the stay in the dorms.
What Night Time Activities Are Provided?
Night Time activities, which are from 7pm
to 9pm, include either evening concerts by
Guest Stars , Talent shows by the students
themselves and/or faculty, Movies and/or
Jam Sessions. All of the above depends upon
the availability of tickets, rooms and concert
halls.
Where do we go to check-in?
You should report to the lobby of the dorm
in which your child is staying. All the dorms
in which your child might stay in for the
camp are located just South of the lake in
the center of Campus. There are four main
towers two towers, two of which, Hecht and Stanford, we regularly book for dorm life with the
camp. In 2004 it was Stanford and we will
try to keep it this way since it is the closest
to all the music buildings. Stanford also
has a covered walkway leading to the cafeteria
for your child to eat dinner and snacks in
the evening.
When is check-in time?
We were told that anytime after 12pm on the
Sunday before camp starts would be fine for
check-in, however, we set aside a time frame
in which it would be ideal for your child
to check-in which is usually from 5pm - 8pm. This time slot provides a time for your
child to check in with all the other kids
and allows him/her to make friends immediately.
Although we do give an updated list of those
staying in the dorms to those that work in
the lobby of the dorm for reference, there
is no guarantee that our dorm monitors will
be there before 5pm, that any other kids
will already be there or that your child
will have something to do if you drop him/her
off before our designated window.
Who will be in the dorms with my child?
We have dorm monitors/Counselors that are
paid to stay in the dorms for the entire
week and provide guidance and assistance.
We have a male and a female in the dorms
for both genders. The males and females are
separated by floor. The Counselors are very
strict about the students abiding by the
rules. In Fourteen years we have only ever
had to send one student home. No drugs are
allowed or tolerated. Violators will be sent
home.
What is the fee to live in the dorms?
It has been arranged at $25/night to live
in the dorms. Most kids check in on Sunday
evening and check out Saturday in the Morning
and catch a flight out to wherever they live,
however, if you decide to check out Friday
or check-in late, simply count how many night
you stay over and multiply it by $25 and
you have your total. $150 for an entire week
of fun is a great deal
Visiting parents or family members can stay
in nearby hotels including a Holiday Inn
directly across the street from the University.
Reservations should be made directly through
the Holiday Inn.
What about dinner and breakfast and Field
Trips?
You can purchase a meal card for only $80
through Dr. Gonzalez that covers breakfast
and dinner at the University cafeteria for
the whole week. You will find out times when you check
in. Your child should have plenty of window
time in the morning and evening to eat breakfast
and dinner. If he/she goes to bed at a proper
hour, they should not have trouble getting
up early to eat a proper breakfast. The camp
begins everyday at 9am except for the Monday
of the camp which everyone has to be in Clarke
Hall at 8:30am for the meeting. Knowing this,
your child should be able to gauge his/her
time properly. Your child should bring a
small amount in excess to cover the cost
of tickets for any night time field trips
should he/she want to attend.
What should my child bring for the dorms?
Towels and sheets are provided in the dorms,
however, it is recommended that you bring
your own towel and pillow. Make sure you
bring enough clothes for the week, something
to cover yourself if it rains, of course
all your toiletries for the bathroom and
so on. Black jeans or pants and black shoes
or tennis shoes are requested for the Friday
Concert. Appropriate daily camp wear for
Miami should include long pants or jeans
or decent length shorts (no short shorts
will be allowed) and T-shirts with no obscenities
on them. A rain jacket and/or umbrella is
always good for the Miami Summer weather.
Sun Screen is advisable. Since the classrooms
are all air-conditioned, a light sweater
or jacket is also suggested.
